Implement the Government of India's Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules
Petition by Satyamev Jayate
To: Mayors, Municipal Commissioners and Urban Development departments across all states
Region: India
Background: Based on the recommendations of a committee appointed by the Supreme Court, the Government of India, in the year 2000, framed the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules for effective solid waste management. The Rules recommend the use of different technologies by municipal bodies to reduce the damaging environmental and health impact of untreated solid waste. Even today, over a decade later, many cities and towns have not initiated any of these measures even though solid waste management is an obligatory function, thus raising serious public health concerns. Petition: We urge and request that the guidelines given in the Municipal Solid Wastes (Management and Handling) Rules be implemented in every state across the country. Regulations must also be put in place to ensure widespread compliance. Waste must be segregated into wet and dry and scientific methods used to ensure that waste is recycled to produce fertilizer or generate power.
This petition will be sent to mayors, municipal commissioners and heads of urban development departments across all states.
