Angels of the Road
Ridden with potholes, roads in Mysore city not only make for uncomfortable travel but are dangerous—leading to frequent, often fatal accidents.
A group of students from Orchid Public School in Mysore had been trying to get local authorities to fix the road leading to their school. Numerous petitions were sent, but no action was taken so they decided to repair the road themselves as part of a project for Design for Change, a global movement which encourages children to come up with creative solutions to a problem and ways to implement it.
The students approached a local road contractor to find out what was required to repair the potholes. They split up into two groups—one dug the roads while the other collected leftover materials. Through a process of trial and error they were able to arrive at the best quality of tar needed. A local contractor also donated some tar towards the effort. A lot of sweat and toil later, they were able to level the road leading to their school. An inspiring example of how each one of us can become a part of the change we wish to see around us.
