Saviour on wheels
Imagine you or your close ones being in an accident and no one coming to help you out. Although bystanders are afraid of consequences of helping an accident victim, one man has made this his vocation in life. He used to be an ambulance driver for the local doctors in Gajraula, Uttar Pradesh, until one day in 2004 he decided that he would use his ambulance solely for helping others. His name is Bhurra.
Bhurra stands guard on the Gajraula National Highway 24—a busy road connecting Delhi and Lucknow. It is known for the high number of road accidents that take place there. Bhurra keeps a watch on this highway. He is on 'duty' every night since the last 10 years and has managed to save over 700 lives in this span. No matter how severe the accident, Bhurra will take the victim to the hospital and ensure that they get proper care.
Although there are obvious financial sacrifices and a lack of approval from his own family, he is sure that this is the right path for him. “I only care about saving lives,” says Bhurra. “At least they will remember me for the rest of their lives.”
