Behind Closed Doors: Narratives of Gender-Based Violence in India
Several episodes of Satyamev Jayate dealt with gender-based violence and the issues surrounding it. After every episode, thousands of viewers wrote, sharing their own experiences of violence. This booklet brings together a selection of a cross section of those narratives. Deeply disturbing, these stories are a snapshot of our society and are divided into four broad categories—Domestic Violence, Harassment for Dowry, Bias Against Daughters and Intolerance to Love.
We are privileged to have an energising and inspiring Preface to this booklet from veteran feminist activist and social scientist, Kamla Bhasin. Her work has inspired generations to aspire for and work towards an India in which there is equality between genders. We publish this booklet in the hope that it might make a contribution, however miniscule, towards making this vision of an equal India, a reality.
