W hen I was about 12, we moved to the US as a whole family. When we moved
here, we used to live with other families as we couldn’t afford the rent. Once,
my dad had to go to India for a short period of time and during his stay, the other
family’s close friend got really close with our family too. My brother and I used to
adore this uncle thinking he was so cool and funny.
One day, I was having a sleepover at this uncle’s house and during this time, I used
to share the bedroom with his daughter. His daughter and I decided that we would
sleep on the loor while listening to music and gossiping. As the night fell upon us,
we both fell asleep whilst changing music CDs and later that night, I got up to ind
that my uncle was on top of me. I froze. I mean, his daughter was sleeping next to
me and I always thought of him as my second dad. So, making myself believe that
nothing bad was happening, I went back to sleep. I didn’t mention this to anyone
and kept hush for a long time.
As months passed, uncle’s family had to go to India with his mum but he had to
stay back due to business reasons. As my parents were working, he asked them if it
would be okay for us to go to his house. So, not realising his actual intentions, naive
me and my brother decided to go with him, excited and happy as little kids thinking
of all the nice things that we can do—go to a park, watch unlimited television, etc.
Once we stepped in his house, within a few minutes, he separated me from my
brother by asking me if I could help him clean his house. He followed me up to the
room and that was where he made his irst move. He kissed me and did many other
inappropriate things. I froze again. It was like time had stopped. Once he inished,
he said that it is our secret. He said, “Just as dad kisses you on the cheek, I do more
because I love you even more.”
Before I could even realise, I started getting memory gaps. Over the years, things
got worse between my uncle and me. I mean, so worse that we ended up discussing
options for me getting an abortion.
