Couples are still being persecuted and killed in the name of family honour

Honour killings in India were the subject of discussion in the Intolerance To Love episode aired on June 3, 2012. Since then, honour killings continue to take place across the country, from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in the north to West Bengal in the east and Tamil Nadu in the south. Here are a few which were mentioned in the media between 2012 and 2013:

Honour killing in Kolkata, brother beheads sister

A 29-year-old brother publicly beheaded his sister, 24, who had eloped with her boyfriend and was living with him. The woman's brother dragged her out of the house and beheaded her with his sword in full public view.

Three held for Bulandshahr 'honour' killing

Three men shot Abdul Hakim dead when he was on his way to buy medicines for his pregnant wife. They were identified as Abdul's wife Mehwish's relatives. The murder was a result of the Mehwish's family's objection to the couple's marriage.

'No regrets' says man who killed daughter, beheaded her friend for 'family honour'

Nidhi, 21, and Dharmendra Barak, 23, were brutally murdered by Nidhi's family after the couple eloped from Haryana's Gharnavati village. Nidhi was lynched to death and Dharmendra, beheaded. Nidhi's father, Billu, showed no remorse for having committed the crime.

Dishonour killing in Tirunelveli keeps police on tenterhooks

A 17-year-old girl from the upper-caste Thevar community was found murdered in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, for having eloped with a Dalit boy. The police suspect this to be a case of honour killing by the girl's family members.

Teenage girl's body found buried, dishonour killing suspected

A 15-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly murdered and buried by her uncle near Haryana's Panchkula district. Her parents had sent her to his house to keep her from seeing the boy with whom she was having an affair. The uncle confessed that he had committed the crime because the boy had landed up in Panchkula.

Thane man arrested for killing teenage daughter

A father stabbed his 17-year-old daughter for eloping with her boyfriend and hid her body in the forest. The girl and the boy, both residents of Thane in Maharashtra, had run away to Uttar Pradesh but had returned to live in Bhayandar.

In Haryana's Bapoli village, a girl was set on fire and killed for having a relationship with a boy. She was missing for ten days, but the family did not file a missing person report. Instead, they found her and murdered her.

Honour killing: Woman killed by father, three others

A woman, who was pressurizing her family to let her marry the man she loved, was strangled to death by her father and three others. Her body was then thrown on the railway tracks in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Man arrested for killing sister, boyfriend

In Rajasthan's Sirohi district, a man killed his 20-year-old-sister who eloped with her boyfriend. The girl, who was married off against her wishes, decided to live with her boyfriend instead. The brother stabbed both of them when they were travelling on a bike.

Girl's father 'kills' youth for honour in Karnal village

In Karnal village, Haryana, a girl's father murdered and threw the body of a boy in the Awardhan canal after he came to know that the boy was having an affair with his daughter.
