My mother’s brother is a millionaire and is well-educated. Yet, he and his wife both deliberately killed
three of their babies while she was pregnant because it was a girl.

Hum do behenein hai. Meri mummy ko kaha gaya tha ki un mein kuchh kami hai jiski wajah se woh
ladka paida nahi kar saki. Mere birth ke time pe meri dadi bahut royi thi. Par mere parents ne kabhi
ladke aur ladki mein differentiate nahi kiya. Hamaare family ke ladke toh kitni baar jail bhi ja chuke hai.
Main apne family mein sab se zyaada educated hoon.

We are eight kids of our parents - six daughters and two sons. My parents had a son as their first child
but after that, they had six daughters, one almost every year just because they wanted one more son and
that is me. I always feel bad about it because their eldest son has already left them - he did that when
they needed him the most. Only my six sisters have been with our parents through their thick and thin.
My father was a veterinary doctor.

My daughter had a love marriage in 2005 but she came back to us in 2010 after going through a lot of
problems. During her pregnancy, her husband and brother-in-law started to force her to get an abortion
and once, her brother-in-law pushed her down the stairs and made her abort her female foetus.

When I was holidaying in Ranthambore, Rajasthan with friends, I came across a cute baby on the street
and started playing with her. Her mother and dadi were with her; they were working on the road
construction nearby. I asked them what the baby’s name was. Her dadi said in a caustic tone that her
name was ‘Faltu’.

I was taken aback and asked her not to say that. The dadi said that since the baby’s mother kept
“breeding” girls, the day this baby was born, she called her ‘Faltu’. I was speechless. Then, the dadi
asked me, “Do you want her? You can have her for Rs 1500.” I began yelling at her and couldn’t stop
thinking about how to bring that unwanted baby back home with me. What should I have done? I have
grown-up kids of my own.
