My neighbour has a girl child and they have got six abortions done so far. I want to do something but I
can’t. It makes me cry whenever I hear about their abortions.

My friend, a professor by profession, was abandoned by her husband when she gave birth to a second
girl. Now she is taking care of both girls all alone. Her husband has not even bothered to see the infant
girl at the time of birth. This is really sad.

I am a doctor and I have worked as a junior resident in the gynaecology department of a government
hospital. I have seen many pregnant ladies coming and asking for sex detection of the foetus and for
abortion. And I have also seen females who used to just sit and cry soon after the delivery because
neither their husbands nor their in-laws had come to visit them. They didn’t come because they had
given birth to a female child. All I could do was feel pity for them and their poor babies.

After watching your episode, my mother told me that my father wanted a boy. We are two sisters. We
never had a bond with our father. Now I think I know why.

I got married in 2012. In 2013, I gave birth to twins. My in-laws and husband were not happy with my
female babies as they were expecting a male child. My husband kept trying to fight with me and beat me
too. In 2014, he forced me to go to my maternal home. Later, I came to know that he was planning a
second marriage.
Around that time, doctors told me that my daughter is autistic and she will need life-long support. My
maternal family is not financially sound as my father is no more. My mother is having a lot of
responsibilities already. I don’t know what I will do.

When I gave birth to my second daughter, my colleague called up and said, “Arre, Lakshmi ho gayi,
Madam? Koi baat nahi. Jaise Bhagwaan ki marzi.” Another colleague said, “Arre, yeh kaise ho gaya?
Didn’t you get the test done? This time, it should have been a boy.”
I suddenly found myself saying, “No, no, I am happy with another daughter.” As a mother, I was feeling
helpless. Why did I have to justify that I was happy with two daughters? Things wouldn’t have been like
this had it been two sons. The only people who shared my happiness were my husband and my elder
daughter.

I am an army officer’s wife living in a small town in Punjab. Just this morning, I met a woman who has
had sex-selective abortions twice. There are many clinics in our area that are involved in this inhuman
practice and charge Rs 25,000 for it. I don’t have any proof though.
