I am an engineer from a middle-class family and my mom and dad work in government offices in
Trivandrum. I got selected in a reputed IT company via campus placements. My parents were proud of
me. Good marriage proposals started coming for me soon after. My parents decided to marry me off to a
person working in the same company as mine.
My husband showed instances of extreme temper at times. Sometimes, he would hurt me but
afterwards, he would promise never to do anything like that again. After about two years, we were both
sent to US on deputation. There, he did not allow me to even check my bank account balance.
After the delivery of my child, my husband and in-laws started acting weird. They would not even allow
me to feed the baby. Restrictions were placed on my lying down, going to bathroom, etc. They would not
even let me consult a doctor for any of my complaints saying that the doctors’ fees are high.
When my health started getting affected a lot, I decided to return home to India. My husband continued
to stay in US. He came back after three years and we never had any conversation without him shouting
at me or physically harassing me. He would force me to pay for all the expenses at home and also for the
EMI of the apartment which we had bought. Though I requested my husband multiple times to have a
discussion on how we should share household expenses, he did not have any such discussion.
In one of the fights that followed, he twisted my hand. When I cried out in pain, my father-in-law
threatened to blow up my head and pounded his fist at me. My husband had a tough time trying to
restrain him from harming me. My father-in-law had already threatened my mother saying he would kill
me.
My husband often abused our son during our fights. He would use bad words like fucking bitch, stupid
asshole, patti, thendi and nayinte mole and he also beat me up in front of him. Though I requested him
not to drag our son in the fights, it fell on deaf ears. Finally, when things became really horrible (my
husband crushed my neck with both hands once), my dad came to my in-laws’ home and asked me to
inform a government or NGO helpline if I’m tortured again. I wanted to visit my parents and sister with
my son but my husband has not allowed me to do the same.
