I got married to the son of a renowned professor of a big university but my husband was trained to think
like he is a king and I am his servant. My father-in-law who is a chauvinist says that women don’t have a
right to have opinions on most issues since they don’t earn. I feel suppressed.

I was an assistant professor in an engineering college before I got married. My father was a government
school teacher and he used up all his savings on my wedding. But the mental harassment that I got from
my in-laws led me to run away from my marital home and the thought of suicide came in my mind.
However, I went back to give my marriage a third chance because my PhD guide always said, “Shaadi
nibhane ke liye hoti hai.” It was all futile. After one month, I begged my father to send my brother to
take me back so as to end the torture. I even lost 10 kgs in just four months because the eatables were
kept hidden from me by my in-laws.

I am 16 years old. I don’t know how to stop this but my maid isn’t coming home these days because her
husband drinks and hits her. She goes to so many houses to work and earns for a family of five. Her
husband suspects that she is having an affair but she is not and she is really nice. I can’t see this
happening and don’t know what to do. The sad part is that no one around is doing anything about this.

I know a lady whose husband would burn her with cigarettes at their Dubai home. He also had many
affairs there. So, she left him with their two kids and started living with his parents in India. He
continues to harass her.

My parents gave me the best of education and opportunities to grow. I now live with my husband’s
family while my parents live alone even though they are not keeping well healthwise. Whenever I want
to visit them, I have to seek ‘permission’ from my in-laws. I am expected to cook, clean and look after
my in-laws all the time.
My in-laws prevent their son from helping my parents in any manner. My parents do not need my
financial help. They knew fully well that they can’t depend on me financially for their old age issues.
Why is it that my husband can demand me to help his parents but I cannot do the same for my parents
without receiving taunts? When will the men of this country change their mentality?

My sister had an arranged marriage and within a week of the wedding, her husband started beating her.
She discovered that he had another woman in his life. She still stayed in the marriage for six months and
throughout, he kept beating her brutally. My parents realised that they should have let her choose her
own partner.
A year after her divorce, I found my soulmate. He was my former brother-in-law’s cousin. My parents
were worried because it was the same family that my sister was married into but they let me get married
to him. I have two beautiful kids and we are very happy together.
