I am an MBA from a reputed Indian institute and had worked for over seven years when I got married to
another similarly “well-qualified” Indian man. My abuse had started ahead of the actual wedding but it
was more emotional and less physical in nature. As if my husband’s alcohol and drug abuse and curbs
on my working, dressing, food and social interactions did not suffice, things went on to pushing,
bullying, arm-twisting, kicking and banging my head against the wall.

On the third such instance of violence, in May 2008, I called Mumbai Police and complained but my
complaint was never lodged as an FIR. A family friend spent two-three days helping me run from pillar
to post across police stations across Chembur, Oshiwara, Andheri, Crawford Market and South Mumbai.
My parents gave up hope and called me back to Delhi where I am now based. My parents gave me full
support and helped me heal emotionally, financially and physically but not many other women are
blessed this way.

My husband’s mother and sister began asking me for my salary from day one. They created differences
between us. I am suffering each day. My husband spends no time with me. His family doesn’t let it
happen. As women, we leave our own families and try and adjust in the new environment but in-laws
like mine make settling down so difficult.

I have been married to my husband for four years and we have two daughters. He walked out on us one
morning at 4 am after he was sure that he no longer needed me for him to get his green card. His family
broke all ties with my kids and me. His mother told me that they used me for him to get to US. My
parents and his parents were friends for 23 years and yet, they betrayed us and had no remorse.

I have lived with a man who is alcoholic for the past 14 years. Every day, my husband gets high and very
aggressive when he drinks. He abuses me and our children. I have spoken to a psychiatrist too but it
hasn’t helped much.

My friend got married in 2012. Within a couple of days, she was subjected to mental and physical
harassment by her husband who works in a big oil and gas company in Mumbai. She had filed a
complaint at a police station but got no help.

My mother has struggled so much to raise us and get us married but my in-laws have left no stone
unturned in torturing me and abusing my family. They just can’t stand their son spending time with me.
I hate such elders.

My friend is being assaulted by her husband and in-laws. It has been four years since her wedding and
she is in trauma due to the physical and mental assault. She lives in Delhi.
