I am a 38-year-old woman based in Ahmedabad. My husband has many affairs. He tries to hide it but I
know the truth. My mother-in-law supports him as well. He also beats me. I am writing this from a
cybercafé even though he has prohibited it for me.

I live in Paris and am 45 years old. My brother, a marine engineer, is a notorious alcoholic. I have
witnessed how he hits his wife and abuses her verbally. He used to beat me a lot too when we were
younger but my mother was unable to do anything about it.

A few years ago, I suspected that my neighbour’s husband beat his wife up. I would hear loud sounds
and thuds from their house. While I kept quiet for some time, I was not at peace and finally spoke to my
neighbour. She denied any such thing.

However, after a few days, she chatted with me. That day, she was beaten up black and blue. She was
brave and started banging my door. I opened and saw her husband fleeing. My mom-in-law and I
calmed her down. I registered a complaint. The lady’s husband was called a couple of times. He realised
his wrongdoings. Finally, things seem to be better now for them.

My elder sister is a victim of domestic violence. She is a lecturer with a seven-year-old son. She has left
her husband and has filed for her son’s custody. The judicial system is so slow that she is struggling to
get a divorce since two years. She has to appear in court four to five times in a month too.

I suffered domestic violence when I was just 22. The police did not help me at all. I left my husband ten
years ago but the fact that I did not get justice still pierces me to the core and doesn’t let me rest in
peace.

My mum who is suffering domestic violence for the last so many years filed many complaints in police
stations in Goa but it was of no use. Not even a single action has been taken against my father and day
by day, he is becoming worse.

My sister is a high school teacher and we got her married to a teacher. She got married in 2001 and all
she got was abuse from her husband - character assassination, beating, etc. He would even beat her at
midnight when she would be in deep sleep. My parents and I always told her to bear the pain.

Once, in the year 2007, he beat my sister till the time she lost consciousness. That’s when we brought
her and her son back to my house and started legal action against him. The cases are still going on in the
court.
