How to file an RTI Back
An application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act can be typed or handwritten in English, Hindi or the official language of the state in which it is being filed. There is no fixed or accepted format for an RTI query.
If you want to file an RTI application, follow these simple steps:
- Begin by writing your complete postal address.
- Below, put in ‘Public Information Officer’ as the receiver’s name with the address of the concerned public authority.
- As the subject of the application, write ‘Application under Right to Information Act, 2005’.
- Give a brief description of the information required. This is the most important section of the application. For this:
- Begin by asking for ‘true, certified copies’ of the documents required.
- List the documents that you require, such as ‘all documents related to the construction of roads in XYZ area in the year 2012’ or ‘number of complaints received against XYZ ration shop’.
- You can also ask for just a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answer to certain questions.
- Be sure to mention all the relevant details (time period, area, etc.) and try to limit your questions to three or four.
- Give the following details:
- Your name
- Place of application
- Your signature
- Mention if you are above or below the poverty line.
- Mention if you want to receive the information through post or in person.
- Attach a court fee stamp (Rs 10) as a fee for filing the application. Additionally, you might be required to pay a fee for obtaining the information (cost of photocopying documents, providing a CD, etc.). This fee differs from state to state. For more details, click here.
- Attach a proof of identity: a copy of PAN Card / passport / ration card / driver’s license.
