I am 25 years old and am from UK. I used to be a happy and outgoing person who lived life to the fullest.
Things with my partner were great at first. I was accepted wholeheartedly by his family. Later, one day, I
was punched and beaten very badly though. The next day, he apologised and sent flowers also. I thought
that this was the first and last time that he had abused me. Little did I know what was in store for me.

The abuse went on for six years. In those years of abuse, I lost everything – even my self-confidence and
my smile due to his jealousy, arrogance and his drinking. My husband still taunts me and says hurtful
things, especially in front of my daughter but after watching your show, I have felt the courage to stand
up and leave. I have realised that I don’t need to be scared. So, I thank you for that. Thank you,
Satyamev Jayate, for the voice you put out.

I had thought of committing suicide because of the daily torture that I faced from my alcoholic husband.
I had been to the police station too but the cops didn’t seem very interested in the case. They directed us
to go to the court. I had also visited many counselling centres but my husband would abuse me there
also.

I stayed away from him hoping that he would mend his ways but things did not work out. For my
children’s future, I would go back again. An office colleague would support me and try to make me think
positive thoughts. One day, I pleaded with my husband to come with me to an alcohol rehabilitation
centre. It worked. Since he realised how alcohol could destroy his life, he has stopped drinking.

This is what my husband has done with me: Drink, hit, steal his wife’s money to get intoxicated and
scare me to the extent that I would be forced to divorce him. I didn’t tell my family because of my
father’s ill health. Then I had a child. He then forced me to work to fend for our child but he would use
the money to drink. Six years later, my father died. My husband’s family then threatened to kill my
child, throw acid on my face and malign me in my company if I didn’t give a divorce. I had to succumb
and give him a divorce.

I have very hostile in-laws. Ever since I got married five years ago, they have nagged me and troubled
me. They dislike it when we bolt our doors from inside when we sleep. They have asked my husband not
to reveal to me how much savings he has. They didn’t allow me to breastfeed my daughter when she was
born.

Although I have never raised my voice in front of them, I took a stand to breastfeed my baby and that
cost me my relationship with my husband. We have a sexless marriage and there are no emotions left
between us. When my in-laws are around, I am constantly criticised for being a lazy housewife, an
insensitive wife and a reckless mother to my girl. Despite everything, I am a God-fearing person. I
believe in goodness and am ready to take care of my in-laws even though they have messed up my life.

Meri shaadi do saal pehle hui. Mera pati bahut shak karta hai mujh par.
Meri maa bimaar hai isliye
main unhe kuchh nahi kehti.
