All my life, I have seen my mom getting abused and I too lived the life of an abused woman for 25 years
of my marriage. At the time of my wedding, my parents told me that I should never come back to them
with any kind of complaint so I kept quiet.
I tried to stand up against my husband’s abuse but failed. There are many reasons. Now I don’t speak up
because my ten-year-old daughter gets upset when she sees us fighting. I have now surrendered for the
next seven years. Once my daughter goes to university, I will leave him. While he doesn’t hit me
anymore, he still abuses me mentally.

I want to share something about my sister’s married life. She got married in 2003 and since then, she
has been continuously facing domestic violence. She is very disturbed. She has two children and her
husband is a very cruel man. He stopped working seven years ago, drinks daily and threatens to kill her.
His mother also doesn’t support my sister. My sister doesn’t want to live there anymore.

My 73-year-old mom was a very successful sportsperson in her younger days. Her marriage with my dad
was a bitter life and she had to go out and work while he stayed at home. She used to be beaten up for
petty reasons like if she returned home late even though the bus would be late.
One day, my dad had thrown a pickle bottle at her face because it didn’t taste good. It hit her hand
instead and her index finger was ripped off. She managed to get her finger to come back to normal after
three months of physiotherapy. Her upper lip has been torn apart too and there have been many other
marks on her body related to these horrifying crimes.
When I was two months old, dad ripped mom’s back with a belt buckle. She had to go to the police. After
seeing the wound on her back, the police told her to leave him and she filed for a divorce. I am proud of
my mom who got out of this and worked like a man and looked after all her kids.

My father died a few years ago. I had a love marriage around that time. My husband had promised to
take me to his family’s home after our wedding. But he didn’t do so. He went back to live with his
parents after the wedding and has kept me in a rented apartment. Whenever I talk about going to his
parents’ place, they hit me and threaten to even kill my family if I go against them.
My in-laws are very powerful and that’s the reason why they have been able to do this to me. Wherever I
work, my in-laws come and humiliate me. They have sold off whatever little gold I had. I had once
complained against them and the court even issued an arrest warrant. However, my father-in-law
bribed the police and got away without being arrested. They called me to the police station and said that
they will take me home happily but that didn’t happen. I still live alone.

My husband and in-laws tortured me for six years. They tried to kill me one day and I was saved by the
local mahila sangh ladies who brought the police with them. When I filed a case for interim
maintenance, my application got dismissed by the judge. My husband and his advocate did not appear
in court for three consecutive hearings. Instead of taking action against them, the court dismissed my
interim application even after getting a positive report from the Protection Officer.
