I know of a woman who lost her life while giving birth to her fourth child. She gave birth to four girls
and faced extreme mental pressure and lack of care. That man later married another woman without
any remorse and got the male child that he so badly wanted.

In 2009, two couples that I knew personally aborted their foetus after tests revealed that it was a girl.
Both the husband and wife were doctors in one case and in the other, the husband was a lawyer and the
wife, an IT professional!

My in-laws and husband tried to kill my daughter when she was only seven months old, but with God’s
blessings, we are safe though I’m still trying to fight for her rights.

I am a 65-year-old woman. When I was born as a first girl child in a joint family blessed with eight boys,
I was cursed by my grandmother and had been ill-treated by the family. When I grew up, I made a firm
resolve that when I have my own granddaughters, I would shower them with all my love.

I am one of two daughters and have often heard people sympathising with or throwing a jibe at my
mother for not having had a son “to care for her in her old age”. But my mother has always been proud
of us and we are confident, independent and happy women thanks to her.

I am a doctor working at a rural government public health centre in Maharashtra. I have seen closely the
women who come for delivery. They get scared and cry when they have a second or third or fourth
female girl child because their families torture them for that. On my part, I have tried to welcome every
girl baby delivered by us by distributing sweets to everyone and having a chat with the families.

I have two daughters. My mother-in-law wept at the birth of my second daughter and didn’t even see her
face for nearly two months. My husband was not happy either. But I firmly told them not to tell me
anything negative about our children.

My parents had five daughters during 1950s, of which three survived. In spite of getting a lot of heat
from his parents and the rest of the community, my father never blamed my mom. He has always been
very loving and caring and made all my girlfriends envious of how well he treated us.
