I have two daughters. Their birth did not make my ex-husband or his family happy. So, I chose to leave
and make room for a happy home for them rather than live in an unhappy house.

I work as an account manager in Varanasi. My whole family was eagerly awaiting my child and so, when
my wife gave birth to a beautiful daughter, we were all very excited and content. In the same labour
room, on the next bed, a pregnant lady was crying because her mother-in-law wanted her to abort her
child as it was a girl. She asked my mother for the reason behind us celebrating to which my mother
proudly said that we have a baby girl and we are very happy about it. My mother’s reply and confidence
changed that lady’s mind and she refused to abort her granddaughter thereafter.

My in-laws told my husband that he should divorce me just because I was going to give birth to a girl.
He beat me throughout my pregnancy. Two weeks after I gave birth by C-section, he beat me up so badly
that I felt my stitches would come undone and I would bleed to death. That night, I slept with bruises all
over my body. The next day, when he went to work, I took my daughter to my parents’ house and told
them to look after my baby.
I then headed to the police station and filed a complaint against him. In England, domestic violence is a
major issue and is taken seriously. That very day, he got arrested. I dropped charges against him. When
he returned home, he told me he does not want to live with me anymore and will divorce me.
That night, we had a long heart-to-heart chat until dawn. He realised that I had never done anything
wrong to him. I was always a good wife and a good daughter-in-law despite their cruel behaviour. He
phoned his family and told them that he is a changed person and that he would not tolerate it if anyone
says negative things about me. Today, a year after the incident, I am very happy with my husband and
daughter.
