We are from a small town in Odisha. When my father came to know that I was a baby girl, he didn’t
come to see me at my nani’s for more than a month. My dad was extremely abusive towards us,
especially towards my mother. Once, my father left home without telling anybody and my mother was
going around looking for him. I think I was eleven years old and my brother was five. We had not eaten
anything for more than 24 hours.

My maternal grandfather came to know about this and he just broke down. He sat on the floor holding
me and my brother and cried. That was the last day he told his daughter (my mother) to “adjust”. My
mom and dad got separated when I was 13 years old. She was extremely scared but she carried on. She
was very meek initially, but slowly, she channelised all her energy on me and my brother. I came to a
university in US to do my MS in Telecommunications in 2002.

I was shocked to see on your show how some women were treated because they gave birth to girls. I
have just one message for them - Be strong and be there for your daughters. If people mock you because
you have daughters, be even more determined to bring them up better. You are the heroes for your
daughters just the way my mom is my hero!

Since my college days, I wanted to be the father of a boy – I don’t know why! I am 30 years old now.
When my wife was pregnant two years ago, everyone would tell us that we will get a boy. When some of
my friends used to tell me in jest that I will get a girl, I would argue with them.

When the doctor told me that I was blessed with a baby girl, I was really upset and my mood was really
screwed up. But when the sister gave my daughter in my hand, I was very happy to see the cute angel.
After watching your episode, I am thankful to God for giving me a cute girl.

I am the first among two daughters that my parents have brought up. When my younger sister was born,
my mother was happy. But my dad did not show any excitement and dadi said, “It’s okay. What can we
do now?” The sad part is that my sister knows all this. But guess what? Today, my sister is my granny’s
favourite grandchild and she is my dad’s favourite too.

I am a financial analyst and a mother of a daughter. My daughter is very sweet but this time, I want a
son so that my family becomes complete. Sex determination was on my mind but after watching your
show, I realised what a big crime it is and I will never do it.

I know a couple in Bihar that has six daughters. They went through all kinds of trauma imposed upon
them by their family and other village members and relatives. But they believed that daughters are a gift
of God and not a curse. Today, one of their daughters is settled abroad, one is a doctor, one is an
engineer and the rest are pursuing their higher education.
