I am a proud mother of two beautiful daughters. Both of them are pursuing Chartered Accountancy.
When they were young, my relatives would say, “Oh no. You have only daughters? God has blessed you
with everything but what you lack is a son.” Thankfully, my husband has been supportive.

I have three daughters and I live in US. When I was pregnant and lived in India, I suffered extremely
bad behaviour and threats. During the third pregnancy, there was a lot of pressure to get a test and an
abortion if it is a girl. My mother and brother were also treated very badly by my husband and in-laws
because I refused an abortion. Later, I got a surgery done to have no more children and to stop the
mental torture. Life is okay now but I don’t feel alive as I still feel the poison in my relationship with my
in-laws.

My ex-husband wanted me to abort our child when I was five months pregnant because it was a girl.
This is why I left him and I’m not sad about that. I’ve remarried and moved to US. My second husband
is very supportive.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I had felt the pressure to give birth to a boy. When my girl was
born, there was a depression period at home. So, I said to my husband, “Your family prays to Devi Maa
every single day. If you can’t accept a girl child, stop praying to the female God.”

I was simply disowned by my ex-husband after the birth of my daughter. My divorce papers arrived out
of the blue by post, so you could imagine what it must have been with a seven-month-old child in my
arms. That was ten years ago and from then onwards, I have built my confidence from scratch and
today, I am a manager in a leading multi-national firm in Sydney by God’s grace.

I was tortured for not getting a sex determination test done. After my daughter’s birth, I was just thrown
out of my in-laws’ house. Thanks to my parents who are very supportive, I started working as a teacher
when my child was only five months old.

My husband was fed with “A son is a must; daughters are a burden” from the time I got pregnant. He
was quite upset when we had one daughter and then another. My in-laws’ place became such that it felt
that a death had taken place. But now, my husband adores both of them so much that he cannot think of
life without them.
