Of love and support
Many parents react with shock, anger and denial when they find out their child is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Abhijit Aher's mother behaved no differently when he 'outed' to her about being a homosexual and transgender. She thought it was unnatural and began avoiding him.
Gradually, the desire to understand her child asserted itself, and putting her anger and pain aside, she began reading about alternative sexual identities. She realized that what her son was experiencing was natural and extended her love and support. Today Abhijit, who goes by the name Abhina, lives openly as a transgender. She shares a supportive, nurturing relationship with her mother.
How parents react and behave when their children open up about their sexual identity is critical—as it plays a key role in shaping self-esteem and general mental health. Abhina's mother urges parents not to shun their children when they find out, but respond with love and understanding.
