M y family is very religious and is a follower of a sadhu in Rajasthan. He is
considered to be a God among his followers. When I was in class 10, he befriended
me and raped me for 3 long years. My parents knew everything but kept mum
because it was considered profane to refuse him anything.
Later, when I met my current husband and told him everything, he helped me come
out of the trauma that still haunts me sometimes. We are a middle-class family and
that man is very powerful. I just wanted to tell you my story.

I have been bothered for a long time by the abuse I received in a popular residential
hostel. I was sent to a residential hostel at the age of 10 and stayed there till I was
18. I was sexually abused two times from age 10–12 by the house supervisors, who
were much older men.
There was nobody to report this to since my guardians used to visit me only once
every two weeks. On top of this, I had extreme social anxiety, which made me
unable to report this even to my friends. I reported this to an in-charge of school
affairs when I was in class 9, but was ordered to keep quiet about it. I told my family
when I was in class 10 and they avoided the topic.
I had a lot of problems trusting people after these events. All through my school
life, college life and further studies abroad, I have had depression, post-traumatic
stress disorder and utter lack of conidence. I did not understand why I was troubled
until recently, when I underwent psychiatric consultation.
I think that I have suffered suficiently in my life for this event and wish to take
action about it. It has been 13 years after the incident now and it might be too late.
However, it took me time to be able to have any constructive thoughts about this,
which happened only after I discussed these with my psychiatrist and my wife.
