My mother and her older sister were both married in the same extended family. My mother could not go
out or speak her mind and once, I saw my father beat my mom just because there was less salt in the
food. My mother finally got the courage to leave our father when I was ten years old but the scars of
their marriage still haunt me.

My mother was deemed characterless by people around us and many men tried to either threaten her or
were indecent. It’s because of this that I am not married and will never tolerate such behaviour from
anyone. My maasi is now almost 60 years old and her 77-year-old husband still beats her daily.

I reported a case in court under Section 498 of IPC after suffering domestic violence for 14 years. But the
judge said that I should continue living with my in-laws because my mother had died before I got
married and I’d have no maternal support or presence in my life if I separated. Now it is even more
difficult to live with my husband and his parents. He blackmails me and my relatives and forces me to
take the case back.

I know of a guy who has killed his wife and despite that, there is no case filed against him. He tortured
her all the time and even though the girl’s father was a famous doctor, he asked his daughter to wait and
see if he changes.

I have also heard some people say that it’s better if a wife dies in her husband’s hand rather than getting
separated from him. The worst thing is that that guy got married to some other lady saying that his wife
was bad and had committed suicide.

I am writing from Bangalore where I work as a technical writer in a software firm. My dad used to hit
my mom regularly. He even made allegations about my elder brother and mom’s relationship. Initially,
my brother used to stop my dad from hitting my mom. But later, he became aggressive too and would
start hitting my second brother and mom for almost anything. One day, he hit my second brother for
two hours just because the newspaper was not kept at its place. If anyone tried to stop my elder brother
from hitting, he would start hitting my mom and me instead.

Today, my second brother has become so “buddhu” types that he often has a blank mind. Even though
he is 34 years old, he does not have the ability to earn even a Rs 5000 salary anywhere because wherever
he goes to work, people take advantage of his buddhu image and trouble him. These are the scars that I
am carrying with me when I look back at my family.

I have not taken action against my elder brother because he has a four-year-old child now. There were
times when my second brother had even registered a police complaint but the police just warned my
elder brother to not do it again. There were times when I wanted to register a police complaint but I
stopped myself since I didn’t want his child to undergo what we underwent.

I am a 19-year-old girl. I am married and pregnant and my husband and mother-in-law torture me every
day.
