I know a woman whose husband beats her so much for dowry. She and her family are very frightened.
Her husband is a very powerful man. I want to help her but I don’t know how I can help her.

When my sister’s case was shown to the local police superintendent for dowry and domestic violence, his
first reaction was: How much money do you want to settle the case? My sister was tortured from the
very first day by her in-laws and husband. She was burnt by a hot iron many times. This continued for a
year.

I got married seven months back. He is working as a software engineer in Bangalore. I too have
completed my BTech. My parents gave them Rs ten lakhs as dowry, ten lakh rupees worth of gold and
some furniture. But my husband and in-laws wanted everything like all kitchenware, double bed, sofa,
washing machine, TV, refrigerator, AC, dining table and they wanted me to bring more gold.
On the evening of my wedding day itself, my father-in-law told me that he won’t allow me into the house
without these items. There was an argument and he left me at my parents’ house. My mother had to
undergo a heart operation immediately and it took over Rs six lakhs. So, there was a huge money
problem. My parents still arranged for dowry goods within three months and sent me back to my
husband.
After going there, I came to know that he was impotent. He didn’t want this matter to come out and he
tried to kill me by leaking gas. By God’s grace, I have escaped from this. I was not able to tell my parents
about this because my mother is not well. My husband started torturing me a lot - mentally and
physically.
Finally, my parents came to know this and brought me back home. His parents supported him and they
started telling everyone that I’m mentally ill. They abused me a lot. After two months of struggle legally,
we took him for a test and it was proven that he is impotent. Even today, my in-laws don’t realise that
they ruined my life. My husband is leading his life normally as before. But I’m unable to face this society
and their comments. My life is over. I don’t understand what to do now.

My father and mother are no more. We are four sisters and one brother and we live in Delhi. My sister
got married in 2012. Her in-laws are very greedy and they have tortured her for dowry. They told her,
“You have earned for ten years. Why can’t you give that income to us?”
Her mom-in-law keeps saying that she should be grateful that her son married her even though she is an
orphan. She verbally abuses her daily and her son does not say anything to his mother saying that at her
age, it is best for her to not have to hear anything negative.

My sister got married seven months ago and her husband and his two brothers along with their mother
are torturing her every day. We have to fulfil their every desire even after we gave them a dowry of
around 20 lakhs. I am helpless.
