My father is 65 years old and my mother is no more. On the day of my engagement, my mother-in-law
and my partner asked my sisters for electronic items and gold jewellery even though we had told them
that we can’t give dowry. Anyhow, my sisters fulfilled all their wishes as they said that this was the last
wish from their side. I got married in early 2015. After the wedding, my in-laws started making a
demand for dowry again. They tortured me physically and mentally and my husband wants to divorce
me. I need help.

I am a software engineer and one of my colleagues has two girls. In his community, giving gold as dowry
is a norm. So, both the husband and wife are working mainly to buy a lot of gold for their daughters. My
colleague is not happy about having daughters. Very sad!

I am from Punjab. My sister got married in Mumbai to a music director. She committed suicide because
her in-laws were harassing her for dowry. My sister never told us about her problems as it was a love
marriage.

I am married into a political family. The demand for dowry started right at the beginning. Due to
harassment, I decided to end the marriage. My case is still in court and yet, even without a divorce, my
husband has married someone else.

I was born in 1987. I am 26 years of age and married in Australia to an Indian. I am a single parent and
sole carer of my children since my husband had left us a few years ago due to dowry. My in-laws and
husband are still demanding dowry despite keeping all my salary in Australia and my father providing
them enough at our wedding.

My husband is now demanding the children as well. An MIT graduate with a double Master’s in
engineering, my husband had nothing to do with our twin daughters because he and his parents were
against female children. I am still facing harassment from my husband and in-laws.

I am from Uttar Pradesh. My elder sister got married in 2014 to the owner of a car rental business. She
was tortured for dowry (for Rs six lakhs) over a few months and when she refused to pay the amount,
she was kept hungry for many days. When things became much worse, she went to a police station to
lodge a complaint but it wasn’t registered due to his influence and power.
