My ex-husband who claimed to love me started harassing me after our wedding for money. I refused to
budge and never told my parents about his demands. On our first anniversary, he threatened me with a
divorce. So I said, “Okay, if you want a divorce, I will not try to change your mind about it.” That’s when
I told my parents and they supported me in getting out of the marriage.

My parents want me to get married since the last two years as I am 25 now. One boy’s family asked for
50 lakhs cash from my family as dowry. Since then, I am so scared to get married. How can I trust
someone to give me happiness if they are so money-minded?

Ever since I got married two years ago, my in-laws are asking for dowry and gifts. For the past one year,
my husband has moved to London alone for work and barely talks to me. I have talked to my Panchayat
about this and they called him to talk about this but he is not co-operating with them.

I am from Punjab. My husband beat me and forced me to bring a car as wedding dowry. I couldn’t take
the harassment anymore so I went to the courts but the judge asked me to compromise.

I am from Chandigarh. My husband lives in US currently. He has been demanding money from my
family ever since we got married in 2013. He uses cheap language while talking about me, my sister and
mother. He even locked me in a room once and went out.

After getting married four years ago, I went overseas to live with my husband and his family. Soon, they
started demanding money. My husband would tell me, “Talk to your parents and ask them to send over
some money.” I always refused and that’s why they abused me and hit me a lot. They would pull my hair
and lock me inside the bathroom. This happened continuously for four months.
I was very lonely because I had no one with me. I made three attempts to commit suicide. Once, I was
walking on the road and I fainted. I don’t know who called the police but the police took me to the
hospital where I stayed for one month. Things got somewhat better for me after that. That’s my story.

On 21st April, 2012, my elder brother’s daughter was supposed to get married but ten days before the
wedding, we refused to have a relationship with the other side. During the engagement, they had said
that they don’t have any demands but as the days came nearer, they demanded a four-wheeler along
with all other household appliances and also, their behaviour was so rude and proudy.
My elder brother was in a position to gift all these items but for us, the person who literally demands
something for such a paak relation which we call nikah doesn’t deserve such gifts. Also, we wanted to
convey a strong message in society about boycotting such type of greedy persons.
